  1. Choose the scheme; the current rate fills in automatically.
  2. Enter the amount (monthly for RD, yearly for PPF and SSY).
  3. Read the maturity value or the regular payout.
  4. For lump-sum schemes, compare the same amount across TD, NSC, KVP, SCSS and MIS.

Worked example

₹1,00,000 for 5 years: 5-year TD pays ₹7,714 a year (₹38,568 in total); NSC grows to ₹1,44,903; KVP doubles to ₹2,00,000 in 9 years 7 months; MIS pays ₹617 a month; SCSS pays ₹2,050 a quarter. ₹5,000 a month in the 5-year RD at 6.7% grows to about ₹3,56,830.

Formula

Time deposit interest per year = P × ((1 + r/4)^4 − 1)
RD maturity = R × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ (1 − (1 + i)^(−1/3)), i = r/4, n = quarters
NSC maturity = P × (1 + r)^5
MIS monthly = P × r ÷ 12; SCSS quarterly = P × r ÷ 4

Frequently asked questions

Did post office interest rates change on 1 October 2026?

No. The Ministry of Finance kept every small savings rate unchanged for October–December 2026, the same as July–September 2026.

Which post office scheme gives the highest interest?

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana and the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme, both at 8.2%. SSY is only for a girl child below 10, and SCSS is for people aged 60 and above (55 for some retirees). For everyone else, NSC at 7.7% and the 5-year TD and KVP at 7.5% are the highest.

Does the new rate apply to my existing deposit?

For fixed-term schemes (TD, RD, MIS, SCSS, NSC, KVP) the rate on the day you invest stays for the whole term. PPF and SSY are different: the current quarter's rate applies to the whole balance.

What are the deposit limits?

MIS: up to ₹9 lakh single or ₹15 lakh joint. SCSS: up to ₹30 lakh. PPF and SSY: up to ₹1.5 lakh a year. Time deposits, NSC and KVP have no upper limit; the minimum is ₹1,000 (₹100 a month for RD, ₹500 a year for PPF, ₹250 for SSY).

Yes, except PPF and SSY, which are tax-free. Deposits in the 5-year TD, NSC, SCSS, PPF and SSY qualify for the 80C deduction, but only in the old tax regime.

How long does KVP take to double my money?

At 7.5%, Kisan Vikas Patra doubles your money in 115 months (9 years 7 months).
