Quick answer

To add GST, multiply the base price by (1 + rate/100). To remove GST from an inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate/100). For intra-state sales the GST splits equally into CGST and SGST; for inter-state sales the full amount is IGST.

How to use the GST Calculator (India)

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Choose the GST rate (5%, 18%, 40% or a special rate).
  3. Pick "Add GST" for a price before tax, or "Remove GST" for a tax-inclusive price.
  4. Choose intra-state (CGST + SGST) or inter-state (IGST).
  5. Read the breakup and copy it into your invoice.

Worked example

Selling goods worth ₹10,000 at 18% within your state: GST = ₹1,800, split as CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900; invoice total ₹11,800. If a customer paid ₹11,800 inclusive, the taxable value is 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000.

Formula

Add GST: GST = Amount × Rate ÷ 100; Total = Amount + GST
Remove GST: Taxable value = Amount ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100); GST = Amount − Taxable value

Frequently asked questions

What are the GST rates in India now?

After the GST 2.0 reform effective 22 September 2025, the main slabs are 0% (nil), 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for specified luxury and sin goods. The old 12% and 28% slabs were merged. Special rates such as 3% (gold, silver) and 0.25% (rough diamonds) continue. Always confirm the rate for your HSN/SAC code.

How do I calculate GST from a GST-inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive price by 1 plus the rate. At 18%, ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 taxable value, so GST is ₹180.

When do I charge CGST + SGST versus IGST?

Charge CGST and SGST (half the rate each) when the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state. Charge IGST at the full rate when they are in different states, or on imports.
