For example, a 10 g 22K chain at ₹7,200 per gram with 12% making charges costs ₹72,000 + ₹8,640 = ₹80,640, plus GST of ₹2,419, total ₹83,059. GST on jewellery is 3% of the full bill including making charges; the 5% rate applies to job work, not to buying jewellery.

Worked example
8 g ring, 22K at ₹7,200/g, making ₹600 per gram: gold ₹57,600 + making ₹4,800 = ₹62,400, GST ₹1,872, total ₹64,272.
Frequently asked questions
Is GST charged on making charges?
Yes. When you buy jewellery, 3% GST applies to the whole value including making charges. The 5% GST rate is for job work, for example when a goldsmith makes jewellery from gold you give them.
What are normal making charges in India?
They vary widely, from about 8% for simple chains to 25% or more for detailed designs. Always ask for the making charge in writing and compare.
Do I get making charges back when I sell?
No. When you sell or exchange jewellery, you are paid only for the gold content at the day's rate, minus any deduction. Making charges, wastage and GST are not refunded.
Why does the tool not show live gold rates?
Rates change through the day and differ by city and jeweller. Use the rate on your jeweller's board so the bill matches.
