Quick answer

Keyword density = (times the keyword appears ÷ total words) × 100. There is no ideal density for Google; use the tool to catch repetition that reads unnaturally, not to hit a target percentage.

How to use the Keyword Density Checker

  1. Paste your text.
  2. Choose 1, 2 or 3-word phrases.
  3. Review the top phrases and rewrite repetitive ones.

Worked example

A 500-word page that uses "GST calculator" 25 times has a 5% density for that phrase, which usually reads as stuffed.

Formula

Density % = Occurrences × Words in phrase ÷ Total words × 100

Frequently asked questions

What keyword density does Google recommend?

Google does not recommend any. Its guidance is to write for people; keyword stuffing is against its spam policies.
